Pittsburgh AI Consulting

We're a Pittsburgh AI lab. Not a coastal consultancy that flies in for the quarterly review. On-the-ground engineering for Western Pennsylvania organizations that want AI built correctly — and want someone local who can walk into the data center if it matters.

Why local matters for AI

AI consulting is a remote-friendly business, and we work with clients worldwide. But a real advantage shows up when the consulting firm is also local: we can walk into your data center. We can meet your compliance team in person when that's what it takes. We can drop a GPU server off ourselves if the procurement cycle is going to take eight weeks otherwise. Proximity is a feature.

Pittsburgh has a deep AI and robotics ecosystem (CMU is down the street, the Innovation Institute is three blocks from us, Argo left a bench of talent now distributed across Aurora, Stack AV, and countless smaller shops). It's a real community. We're embedded in it.

How we engage locally

About 2 Acre Studios

Founded 2010 in Pittsburgh. Originally a full-stack development shop shipping for Fortune 500 clients via Leo Burnett, Arc Worldwide, and direct engagements (Kellogg's, Hertz, Stryker, ConAgra). Pivoted to AI engineering in 2023. 60+ open-source repositories. ARC-AGI-3 competitor (François Chollet's public reasoning benchmark). Zero tolerance for vendor lock-in. Run by Marc Shade (Agentic AI Chief Engineer) and Scott Frederick Laughlin (Lead AI/ML Engineer).

Start with a free working session

If you're a Pittsburgh-area organization considering AI, the easiest first step is our free 30-minute AI Readiness Assessment. No pitch deck. No sales theater. A working session where we map your current stack, surface the two or three highest-ROI AI opportunities, and give you a written one-page summary. Most companies walk away with a clearer picture of what to do first, even when the honest answer is "not yet."

Frequently asked questions

Do you work with clients outside Pittsburgh?

Yes — most of our delivery work is remote and our clients are spread across North America. The "Pittsburgh" framing is about where we're based and where we can show up in person. For remote clients, the engagement model is the same, minus the on-site visits.

Can you come on-site in Pittsburgh?

Yes. For Pittsburgh-area clients we come on-site for hardware installation, stakeholder discovery, executive presentations, and go-live without additional travel billing. For elsewhere in Western PA (Greensburg, Cranberry, Washington, Mon Valley) same deal.

Are you affiliated with CMU?

Not institutionally. We're independent, founded in 2010, not a CMU spinout. We know plenty of CMU people and draw on the local ecosystem; we don't speak for the university.

Do you do grant-funded or civic work?

Selectively, yes — for non-profits, civic organizations, and mission-driven groups in Pittsburgh. We prioritize engagements where discretion, small scope, and careful execution matter more than flash. Reach out and describe the situation; we'll tell you honestly whether we're the right fit.

What's the local Pittsburgh AI scene look like?

Dense, technically serious, and collaborative. CMU is the gravitational center. The Innovation Institute, the robotics corridor around Lawrenceville and the Strip, the remnants of the Uber ATG/Argo diaspora, a growing startup community, and the enterprise AI footprint of large local employers (UPMC, PNC, Highmark, Eaton, PPG). It's a real community and we're active in it.
